New Visions Career Academies

Broome Tioga BOCES Career Academies are honors-level career exploration programs for high school seniors who think they might be interested in careers in

Internships are the heart of New Visions. For three mornings each week, students work side by side with doctors, lawyers, and educators, observing and participating in real life experiences. Students spend each morning taking classes and going on community internships, then return to their individual schools in the afternoon.

New Visions classes include a core course in Health, Education, or Law and Government, as well as an integrated program of English, Economics, and Public Affairs.

Applicants to the program must have at least an 85% grade average, and the application process includes an interview and essay.

For more information please see Mr. Ferro in the guidance office.

Youth Apprenticeship Program

If you are a sophomore and would like to see what it is really like to work in an occupation in which you are interested, then you should ask Mr. Ferro about the Youth Apprenticeship Program.

Youth Apprenticeship is traditionally a two-year program designed to offer high school students the opportunity to explore a career in one of several occupational areas and earn a 5-unit Regents sequence in Career and Technical Education.

If you are a junior and think that you have missed the opportunity to participate in the Youth Apprenticeship Program, this may be your lucky year. There is a new one-year option for Seniors who apply in the spring of their Junior year. Seniors participating in the one-year option will earn three credits.

Students are paid for the hours that they work and have the opportunity for possible summer employment. Students will learn a host of marketable job skills that will give them an edge when applying for college or a job after high school.

For more information, or to find out what positions are available, please see Mr. Ferro in the Guidance Office.

Annual Medical Examination

The New York State Education Law requires a physical for each new student and all 10th grade students. Parents have the option of using their family physician or the school's physician. A sports physical is also acceptable. If the physical exam form is not turned in by October 1st, a school physical will be scheduled. Physical exam forms are available in the Health Office. The school should be notified of any known student health problems or any changes in information previously submitted. Scoliosis screenings will be done annually for students under the age of 17 who have not had a physical. Vision screenings are performed on students annually. Hearing screenings are performed on all 10th grade students.

Administration of Medicine

If a student must take any medication during school hours, the school will require:
  1. 1. A written request from the parent/guardian.
  2. 2. The written order of the prescribing physician indicating the name, purpose and dosage requirements of the medication.
  3. 3. The appropriate form requesting medications to be given in school can be obtained in the Health Office. It is acceptable for the physician to write the medication order on their prescription sheet instead.
  4. 4. All medication is to be dropped off and picked up by the parent/guardian at the beginning and end of the prescription period.
  5. 5. All medication must be in the original container. Ask your pharmacist for a double label for the school time doses.
