Physical Education

The Physical Education Department's emphasis is on life-long physical activity based on a sequential, kinesthetic approach. Students will be competent in six areas and proficient in all three areas of physical education unpon graduation. SCC adheres to the NYS Department of Education standards in physical education: (1) personal health and fitness (2) a safe and healthy environment, and (3) resource management. These standards will lead students to become lifelong activity learners.

Full year course, Grades 9-10, 11-12
Prerequisites: none.
Credit: 1/2 unit

The ninth and tenth grade Physical Education program is geared toward an understanding of team sports concepts. The eleventh and twelfth grade program stresses more advanced play in some of the team sports, although the program also attempts to offer individual sports which will carry over into life. The program emphasizes a high level of physical fitness through an exercise and testing program for all grades.

Objectives:

  1. To develop the ability to meet the psychological demands made upon the organism, to resist fatigue, strengthen muscles, and increase cardio-vascular efficiency and maximum physical fitness.
  2. To acquire basic games and sports skills, strength, agility, flexibility, coordination, balance, reaction time, concentration, and aesthetic feeling.
  3. To develop the ability to express thoughts clearly and communicate an understanding of sports theories and practices.
  4. To develop an acceptance of own's own physique and physical characteristics.
  5. To derive satisfaction and pleasure from learning new skills of both competitive and noncompetitive natures and participating in wholesome leisure-time activities.

909. ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: Approval of the department.
Credit: 1 unit

This course is particularly designed for the student who is unable to participate in the regular physical education program on either a permanent or temporary basis. The goal of the program is to provide physical education for every student, regardless of his/her physical situation. Thus, the program is individually oriented to the needs of each student participating. Basic skill development is stressed. Examples of types of activities include: jogging/walking, weight-lifting, ball-handling skills, and aerobic exercise through the use of various types of activities.

Objectives:

910. FITNESS AND NUTRITION (GIRLS)

Half year course, Grades 11-12
Prerequisites: none.
Credit: 1/2 unit

Do you want to get in better shape? Are you interested in getting in better condition to play a sport? Are you interested in becoming a nutritionist, athletic trainer, personal trainer, or pursuing another carer in the health and fitness area?

If so, this course is for you. You will get a chance to assess your own fitness and develop your own personal fitness program. We will visit or hear from local professionals about the best programs, how to choose fitness equipment, proper techniques in lifting, and fads and fallacies. We will learn to shop for and prepare healthy meals. We will also help develop confidence by doing challenging individual and team activities.

Objectives:

The goal of this course is promote health for everyone, with an emphasis on lifetime activities designed to meet personal needs.
  1. To become informed consumers in the matters related to lifelong physical activity and fitness.
  2. To learn self-management skills which lead to adopting healthy lifestyles.
  3. To learn lifelong fitness and physical activity concepts.
  4. To take personal responsibility for program planning and setting individualized goals.
  5. To recognize and overcome the barriers to reaching one's activity and fitness goals.
  6. To use technology to promote healthy living and to separate fact from fiction.
  7. To access personal progress using a variety of tools.
