Music

musicians The Music Department at SCCHS gives the student an opportunity to deepen his/her understanding of music and to develop personal skills for music performance.

NOTE: As stated in each applicable course description, all performance-based courses include a concert participation component, without which credit cannot be gained. Any student forced to miss such a concert due to illness may gain credit by:
  1. submitting a written excuse from a parent or guardian, AND
  2. preparing an 8-10 page report on a musical topic selected by the teacher, OR a musical composition of equal length.

The makeup work must be submitted by the end of the marking period during which the concert is missed.

813. CHORUS 9-10
814. CHORUS 11-12

Full year course, Grades 9-10, 11-12
Prerequisites: none
Credit: 1 unit

The chorus is a performing group which sings in parts. Members must perform in one concert per semester.

Objectives:

  1. The student will develop a love for part singing.
  2. The student will be able to follow the written directions of the music and the gestures of the conductor.
  3. The student will know how to achieve good tone production.

815. SELECT CHORUS

Full year course.
Prerequisites: By audition only. (Students do not need to be in General Chorus.)
Credit: 1 unit

This course is for serious vocal/choral students. It requires students to travel to competitions in major cities in the United States and Canada once a year.

Objectives:

  1. To be able to sing music from classic repertoire.
  2. To learn the art of advanced choral techniques.
  3. To learn how to perform music and movement in a show choir format.

882. CHAMBER GROUP

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: By audition only.
Credit: 1/4 unit

This course is a small ensemble group formed to explore types of music requiring more serious study. This course for the intermediate or advanced student will concentrate on the classics.

Objectives:

  1. To be able to sight-read advanced music.
  2. To have a well-rounded knowledge of all composers and styles of music.
  3. To participate in at least two concerts.
  4. To study liturgical music as it pertains to historical composers.

820. MUSIC THEORY 1

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: none
Credit: 1 unit

Music Theory is the beginning stage in learning to read and write music. It includes the study of basic musical signs and how they are interpreted at a keyboard instrument. The course is intended for the student who does not read music or who reads it at an elementary level.

Objectives:

  1. The student will be able to sight read simple melodies in any key, minor or major.
  2. The student will be able to write melodies in all major and minor keys.
  3. The student will be able to write and use the fundamental chords in any key.

824. MUSICAL THEATRE SKILLS

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: none
Credit: 1 unit

This course is a "hands-on" course that enables the student to learn the skills an actor needs to have on stage. The student will learn the arts of juggling, sword fighting, hand-to-hand combat, tap dance, beginning gymnastics, and circus techniques. This course is very athletically oriented.


850. BAND

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: Must enroll in Sectionals
Credit: 1 unit

This course is a band class for beginner students, designed to increase music skills. There is also a study of various types of music and historical materials for many types of band music. An instrument is required in most cases. This course is recommended for ninth graders.

Objectives:

  1. To be able to sight-read up to eighth notes.
  2. To be able to master all signs use in full band.
  3. To participate in at least two concerts.
  4. To master all given charts.

872. STAGE BAND

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: By audition only; limited to 30 participants. Students must be enrolled in Sectionals.
Credit: 1 unit

This course is a large ensemble exploring music of "Big Band", Modern Jazz, Pop, and Jazz-Rock. An instrument is required in most cases. Performance is required.

Objectives:

  1. To be able to master normal signs used in band material (e.g., D.C., D.S., coda, section markings, repeat signs),
  2. To be able to use all key signatures and note values.
  3. To be able to sight-read up to sixteenth notes.
  4. To participate in at least two shows or concerts.
  5. To have a well-rounded concept of many types of music.
  6. To be able to play two octaves of the chromatic scale.

855. GUITAR 1

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: none
Credit: 1/4 unit

This course covers all types of guitar styles and techniques, music reading, transposing, improvising, and many other topics. An instrument is required in most cases.

Objectives:

  1. To use basic note reading.
  2. To master basic chords.
  3. To experience group playing in a liturgy or a concert.

856. INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED GUITAR

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: teacher approval
Credit: 1/4 unit

This course is a further development of skills covered in Guitar 1.

Objectives:

  1. To stress reading of notes and chords.
  2. To master basic theory.
  3. To learn all types of material from Folk Mass to Classical.
  4. To participate in class playing.

866. ADVANCED INSTRUMENTAL GROUP

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: By audition only; limited to 10 participants.
Credit: 1/2 unit

This is a small group which will enable the advanced musician to study more in-depth music such as modern jazz, semi-classical and popular music, the study of improvising, and sight-reading. Performance is required.

Objectives:

  1. To read up to sixty-fourth notes.
  2. To complete at least three advanced pieces each semester.
  3. To perform at least once a semester.
  4. To learn to improvise using "blue note" scale.

SECTIONALS: WOODWINDS, BRASS, RHYTHM

Full year course, Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: Band or Stage Band. Students are required to sign up for the appropriate sectional group.
Credit: 1/4 unit

Woodwinds: Flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone
Brass: French horn, cornet, trumpet, trombone
Rhythm: Guitar, piano, keyboard, percussion, strings

This is a course for more in-depth study of individual sections of band material. It is scheduled twice per cycle and each band member must enroll for one session per cycle, according to schedule. Stage Band and Band members must enroll in one of these sessions.

Objectives:

  1. To reinforce band curriculum and improvising, using a more personal approach.
  2. To continue rehearsal of band material using some individual pairing.
